What is a prosthodontist?

People often ask, “What is a prosthodontist?” The question couched inside that question is “Why should I visit a prosthodontist?”

Before we explain the different services that we offer, we’ll answer those questions.

Prosthodontics is one of only nine specialties recognized by both the American Dental Association and the State of Tennessee. These dental specialties include the following:

  • Dental Public Health
  • Endodontics
  • Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology
  • Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
  • Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology
  • Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics
  • Pediatric Dentistry
  • Periodontics
  • Prosthodontics

Prosthodontics in particular includes the following procedures: crowns, bridges, veneers, dentures, cosmetic dentistry, smile design, dental implants and comprehensive dental rehabilitations.

A prosthodontist is to dentistry what a master architect is to design and building. After graduating from an American Dental Association accredited dental school, dentists must complete three or more years of additional academic, clinical, and laboratory  training, research, lectures, patient treatments and designing and fabricating restorations to become practicing prosthodontists. This formal training usually takes place in an ADA accredited medical center or university.

Prosthondontists orchestrate both simple and complex dental rehabilitations, which include various dental and cosmetic challenges. Extra years of education and training gives them the knowledge and technical skills necessary to restore or replace natural teeth, treat facial and dental deformities, and expertly craft dentures, partial dentures, fixed bridges, crowns, veneers and dental implant restorations. Prosthodontists are trained to deliver the highest level of service and quality of dental restorative treatments.

Prosthodontists customize a treatment plan for each patient that prioritizes a precise balance between function and aesthetics. and East Tennessee Prosthodontics is no exception. We’re not for everyone. Some people would be just fine going to a regular dentist. If you are searching for that extra level of specialized care, however, then we’re ready to walk with you through a transformation.
